By Josh Popichak – Rose Bank Winery on the outskirts of historic Newtown, Bucks County, has become a popular place to say “I do” thanks to the unique combination of scenic beauty, rustic charm, comfort, elegance, and of course, excellent wine, that it provides its guests.
More than just a wedding and event venue, Rose Bank is also a fine place to taste and buy some of the best wines produced along the Bucks County Wine Trail, which includes seven wineries located throughout the county.
The 11-acre property owned by Beverly and Dave Fleming Sr. occupies a piece of land that was originally deeded by William Penn to his daughters, and it retains an air of Colonial era grandeur.
Evocative stone-and-wood structures clustered far from the main road are at the center of bucolic grounds that are meticulously maintained throughout the seasons.
That attention to detail is one of the reasons why Rose Bank hosts weddings nearly every weekend, Dave said. Another reason is that brides and grooms who host their nuptials and reception at the winery have choices they may not at some other wedding venues.
“It’s just important to listen to people,” he said, noting that couples can choose from among 35 different caterers with whom the winery partners when it comes to weddings.
The “slow season” for weddings and events at Rose Bank is from January through February, but its main building is open to the public year-round, Thursday through Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Those are the days when you can visit the winery’s cave-like tasting room and sample their wines and/or pick up a few bottles to enjoy later.
Gourmet cheeses and specialty food items are also available to enjoy with your wine.
In total, Rose Bank produces about two dozen different wines, from traditional dry and semi-dry varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay to sweeter-tasting fruit wines such as Red Raspberry to seasonals, which are only available at certain times of the year.
For example, the winery’s Spiced Apple wine is available at harvest time in the fall and has been described as tasting like “apple pie in a bottle.”
Rose Bank’s white Summer Sangria combines citrus and tropical fruit flavors for a taste that’s been known to conjure up thoughts of afternoons spent lounging poolside or perhaps relaxing in the shade of a palm tree, so it’s a good choice for summer sipping.
Some of Rose Bank’s most popular wines are its Pinot Grigio and Serendipity, which is a unique blend of both Pinot Grigio and Riesling.
Many customers prefer sweet wines, but Rose Bank has something for every taste, Dave said.
The Flemings also own a popular pick-your-own farm, farmers market, garden center and entertainment venue in nearby Yardley called Shady Brook Farm.
The farm is where you’ll find many Rose Bank wines available for purchase by the bottle, and also by the glass at outdoor events.
It was through their ownership of Shady Brook Farm that the Flemings came to purchase Rose Bank Winery in 2000, Dave explained.
Back then it was known as In & Out Winery, and it was the only local winery that would regularly bring wines to the farm, he recalled.
When they learned it was for sale, they jumped at the opportunity to create an in-house wine supply chain for Shady Brook Farm. They renamed the property, and the rest is wine-making history.
In addition to Shady Brook Farm, Rose Bank wines are also available for purchase at Top of the Hill Market in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia.
Rose Bank also hosts special events at various times throughout the year, including goat yoga, art workshops and even country dancing nights.
